Older homes and courtyards
Patios for Fremantle Courtyards
Many Fremantle homes are older cottages with a small courtyard out the back. A patio there has to fit a tight space, sit well against old walls and cope with the salt air off the port.
A slim roof edge
A flat roof keeps a low, neat line against an old wall, and it can be freestanding if the wall can't take a fixing.
Downlights in the ceiling
Insulated panels such as SolarSpan and Cooldek can take LED downlights, so a small courtyard works at night.
Epoxy-coated steel
Close to the port and the ocean, you can choose steel with an epoxy coating, a tough protective layer against salty air.
Freestanding or joined to the house

Fremantle patio approvals
Do You Need Approval for a Patio in Fremantle?
Most Fremantle patios need a building permit, and on a heritage home a patio can also need planning approval from the City of Fremantle.
What's handled for you
- Site plans showing where the patio sits on your block
- Engineering certificates, an engineer's sign-off on the design
- The building permit application to the City of Fremantle
Most homes: no planning approval
A patio on a single house doesn't need planning approval if it meets the R-Codes (the state's rules for homes, such as setbacks) and the home isn't heritage protected. It will usually still need a building permit.
Heritage homes
A home listed as Level 3 on the City's Heritage List can skip planning approval for a patio out the back. The patio must be no more than 3 metres high, meet the R-Codes and be freestanding or only fixed to the wall. Homes with a higher heritage listing need planning approval.
Keep it behind the house
In Fremantle's heritage areas, the City wants patios and other add-ons behind the main wall of the original house, screened from the street. Carports go behind the house too, unless the home isn't individually listed and there's no other spot for one.

Fremantle FAQs
Questions About Patios in Fremantle
Answers on heritage rules, carports, small courtyards and cost for a patio in Fremantle.
Can I put a patio on a heritage home in Fremantle?
Yes, and on a Level 3 listed home a rear patio doesn't need planning approval. It has to be no higher than 3 metres, meet the R-Codes and be freestanding or only fixed to the wall. Homes listed at Level 1A, 1B or 2, or on the State Register of Heritage Places, need planning approval first.
Do I need planning approval for a patio in Fremantle?
Not usually, if the home isn't heritage protected and the patio meets the R-Codes. A building permit is usually still needed, and that application is handled for you.
Where can a carport go on a heritage home?
Behind the house where possible. The City may allow one in front of a home that isn't individually listed, if there's nowhere else for it. It has to be open on three sides, average no more than 2.8 metres high and have posts no wider than 150mm.
Can a patio go in a small courtyard?
Yes. A flat or skillion roof suits a tight space, and a patio can stand on its own posts if an old wall can't take a fixing.
How much does a patio cost in Fremantle?
The size and roof style set the price, and so does epoxy-coated steel if you choose it for the salty air. Once the patio is measured, your quote shows the figure, and interest-free finance is available from $55 a week, subject to approval.
Which Fremantle suburbs do you cover?
All eight in the City of Fremantle: Fremantle, North Fremantle, South Fremantle, Beaconsfield, White Gum Valley, Hilton, O'Connor and Samson.
